I am delighted together with my colleague Qossay Eleyan to bring you our interesting report on “Discovering North Cyprus” from Kyrenia Gate which is a gate in the Lefkosa/Nicosia city walls in Northern Cyprus.
The gate was built in 1567 by the Venetians, as a part of the new city walls and used for transport and travelling to the northern areas, especially Kyrenia. This was restored by the Ottomans in 1821 who added a square chamber with a domed roof, and in 1931 the British Administration demolished the section of the walls around the gate to allow traffic into and out of the city on either side of the gate building.
The gate building is now used as a tourism information office by the Lefkosa Municipality and on the outside of the building there are some interesting plaques and in the garden area there are some iron cannons.
